Catholics asked to get more involved with other strata

HA NOI — Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong has requested that all Catholic dignitaries and followers unite with other strata of the country in building and protecting the Motherland.


Trong made the statement yesterday at a meeting with representatives of the Viet Nam Committee for Solidarity with Catholics.


Priest Nguyen Cong Danh, chairman of the Viet Nam Committee for Solidarity with Catholics, and Priest Phan Khac Tu, vice chairman and general secretary of the committee, reported to Trong about results of the fifth congress of Vietnamese Catholics, which successfully concluded in Ha Noi yesterday.


On behalf of the representatives, Danh said the dignitaries would actively encourage Catholics to participate in patriot movements in the spirit of, “Our joy is to serve the nation.”


At the congress, which concluded earlier yesterday, Priest Nguyen Cong Danh was elected chairman of the Viet Nam Committee for Solidarity with Catholics, and Priest Phan Khac Tu was elected as vice chairman and general secretary of the committee.


The congress approved a resolution which affirmed that the patriotic movement of Vietnamese Catholics in previous years had strongly and widely developed, actively contributing to building and protecting the Motherland.


Congress participants said they were determined to continue encouraging Catholics to actively participate in emulation movements, as well as movements conducted by the Government and the Fatherland Front of Viet Nam.


They highlighted one movement of bringing together all people to build new lives in all residential areas.


The congress called on all Vietnamese Catholics in the country and abroad to actively participate in all aspects of labour, studies, business, production and charity, and to continue to contribute to the national socio-economic development. —
