Alleys form soul of old Hoi An

Alleys form soul of old Hoi An

QĐND – Wednesday, January 06, 2010, 21:21 (GMT+7)

Falling in love with Hoi An in the central province of Quang Nam is falling in love with its wonderful alleys, which for locals are the soul of their home town.

According to the town’s documents, major roads in Hoi An, such as Tran Phu, Nguyen Thai Hoc and Bach Dang were formed in the 17th century along the Hoai River . A system of alleys then gradually evolved to link those roads.

Many alley names remind locals and visitors of historic and folk legends. Sica Alley once had the French Sica alcohol stores, and Ba Le Alley had the Ba Le well with water that was sweetest and coolest in Hoi An.

There are other wells believed to be blessed by beneficent genii, the ancient spirits that were part of the seventh century Champa Kingdom , a Hindu-Buddhist culture with trading routes around Southeast Asia .

Alleys in Hoi An are normally so narrow they can only fit two or three people walking alongside together and their sides are the sides of houses or garden walls.

The alleys are long and covered with moss and lichen and many contain small wells that have witnessed families and neighbours gathering for generations.

Thai Te Bieu lives in a home in an alley on Tran Phu Street with four generations of his family. His son and daughter have set up businesses in the city centre.

“If my descendants find it a must, they can move to other places, but I can’t leave this alley,” said Bieu. “There are so many memories.”

The director of the Hoi An Centre for Monument Management and Preservation, Nguyen Chi Trung, said the alleys were the integral parts of Hoi An’s architecture, establishing its links with the past.

“For so many years, the ancient houses have existed along with the lanes to serve them,” Trung said.

“Many tourists have fallen in love with Hoi An just because of the alleys,” Trung said. “They provide a sense of a countryside community in the town.”

For Hoi An people, the alleys are bridges for neighbourly affection. Pham Thi Loc and Tran Thi Cung, who live in an alley on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street , realise this after decades of togetherness.

“We live in two different houses, but it’s just like one,” they said. “Although we are not relatives, we love each other like sisters and are always together.”

“A special thing is that tourists quickly adapt themselves to our way of manner,” Loc said. “As the paths are narrow, they always give way to others with friendly smiles.”

Trung said the meaning of alleys would be promoted in the future when Hoi An became a city completely without cars and motorbikes.

“People will prefer walking through alleys to save space and time,” he said.

Hoi An authorities said they were determined to keep the alleys intact as some had become busy trading points with booming tourism. “To preserve the soul of the city, we attach special importance to keeping waves of traders from entering the alleys,” Trung said. “Streets without motor vehicles are what we’re trying to keep that soul.”

“We believe that locals and tourists comprehend the spiritual value of each alley they are living in or walking through.

Exploring Cham culture

Exploring Cham culture

QĐND – Wednesday, January 06, 2010, 21:22 (GMT+7)

Looking at a visitor concentrating on a sculpture, I set aside my intention to make her acquaintance and ask her feelings about the Cham Sculpture Museum, which stands silently facing the Han River in the central coast city of Danang. Like the others, she stopped for a long time at every Cham sculpture to read the historical notes. I understood that was not a time for talk as she was indulged in the world of Cham sculpture.

Not seen as a cradle of Cham culture, Danang is known with a Cham museum built in 1915 and housing some 2,000 artful Cham sculptures that were made of sandstone, terra-cotta and copper from the seventh to the fifteenth centuries. Those works are organized by location, such as My Son, Tra Kieu and Dong Duong, to make it easy for visitors to identify the provinces with Cham communities.

Walking through the corridors and display rooms, one may feel the color of time through artful sculptures which were carefully collected from ruins. Photo stories tell of the ups and downs of a culture whose golden past has left creative artful sculptures featuring religious symbols and the curves of dancing girls, among other things.

In other words, the museum is where Cham cultural features come to life again. That is one reason it is a favorite destination for many travelers during their visit to the coastal city. According to the Danang Tourism Promotion Center, the Cham Sculpture Museum received 124,800 visitors in 2009, including 106,000 foreigners.

It is better to have an experienced guide because many of the sculptures have a mysterious legend which you may otherwise miss. If you go in a group of five, the museum can arrange a guide to lead you through the history of Cham people via sculptures featuring activities of their daily lives. If you go alone, you can also ask for a guide give him/her a tip that is more or less up to you. Or you can explore by yourself and read the historical notes for information.

If you are visiting the city, save two hours for the Cham Sculpture Museum to explore Cham cultural features. The museum is located on 2/9 Street in Danang City. Entrance is VND30,000 per adult, VND5,000 for students and free for high school students.

Indochina given second chance to re-open flights

Indochina given second chance to re-open flights

QĐND – Saturday, January 02, 2010, 21:10 (GMT+7)

The Civil Aviation Administration said it would give Indochina Airlines, the country’s only private carrier, a chance to resume services in mid-January after it failed to do so late last year.

Vo Huy Cuong, head of the administration’s Aviation Transport Department, said that although the administration had warned that it would revoke Indochina’s license if the airline couldn’t resume service by January 1, Indochina has made efforts to maintain its operation.

Cuong said Indochina reported its situation to the administration on December 31 and requested approval to restart flights in mid-January. The proposal was being considered, he said.

Indochina, which opened in November 2008, has postponed its plan to resume flights several times since suspending its service November last year due to both technical and financial problems. Before the suspension, it was using only one airplane on the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City route, having closed all other services since the middle of this year.

In a report published by local news website VietNamNet on Friday, Indochina Managing Director Le Hong Pho said the carrier had reached agreements with its service providers concerning its debts, reported to have reached more than VND30 billion (US$1.6 million) last year.

The carrier plans to rent two Boeing airplanes to resume both Hanoi-HCMC and HCMC-Da Nang routes for the upcoming high season before Tet, or the Lunar New Year, he said.
