Blaze breaks out at Da Lat hotel

The restaurant of the Golf 1 Hotel in the Central Highlands City of Da Lat caught fire on October 26, destroying the eatery and surrounding structures.

The fire was thought to be caused by a leaking gas tank.

 

Staff said the fire started in the kitchen and that only a few employees were in the restaurant at the time. No injuries were reported.

Five fire trucks and hundreds of firefighters and police were mobilized to put out the inferno and the blaze was under control within 30 minutes.

Viet breaks his own record at national swimming champs


Top Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet from Hai Phong broke his own national record in the men’s 100m breastroke at the VietinBank Cup National Swimming Championships at the Ha Noi Aquatic Sports Centre on Thursday.


Viet, a 21-year-old member of the national team, finished with a time of one minute and 2.02 seconds, beating his old record of one minute and 2.17 seconds, which he set in the World Swimming Championship in July.


Hanoian Do Huy Long beat five-year national record holder Nguyen Huy Hoang in the men’s 50m butterfly with a time of 25.49 seconds.


Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen, 15, also broke the record in the women’s 50m butterfly in 28.69 seconds.


She beat the old record of 29.20 seconds set by Nguyen Kieu Oanh 16 years ago.


Quoc and Trang win gold at table tennis tournament


Doan Kien Quoc and Mai Hoang My Trang won gold in the men’s and women’s singles event at the National Table Tennis Club Championship on Thursday.


Quoc of Khanh Hoa, who is the only Vietnamese table tennis player with two Olympics under his belt, beat Vu Thai Ngoc Trinh of Ha Noi 4-0 in the final (11-6, 11-9, 11-9, 12-10) to gain the title.


On the women’s side, Trang of HCM City Telecommunication had no difficulty beating her team-mate Mai Xuan Hang 4-2 (8-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-8) in the final to defend her title successfully.


The event, which attracts eight men’s and eight women’s teams to Lao Cai province, will wrap up tomorrow.


Liem leads Xingqiu International Open chess tournament


Grand Master Le Quang Liem defeated GM Wen Yang in the eighth game at the Zhejiang Lishui Xingqiu International Open on Thursday to receive seven points and took the lead of the event.


Liem had six wins and two draws and is the only undefeated player.


Chinese Yu Yangyi ranked second with six points. Three players including Wen Yang, Liu Qingnan and Zhou Weiqi stood equally with 5.5 points.


Da Nang secures a place in the U-21 football championship final


Da Nang secures a final berth after a 4-0 win over T&T Ha Noi in the semi-final of the National U21 National Football Championships on Thursday.


Da Nang will meet Binh Duong, who crushed Quang Ninh Coal 3-1 in other semi-final yesterday.


The best players of the tournament will be selected to make Viet Nam squad competing against Iran, China, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia in the U21 International Football Tournament next month. —

Anh breaks away for third stage win

CAN THO CITY — Domesco Dong Thap team’s Do Tuan Anh clinched the third stage win in the 2009 Mekong Delta Tour – Vinaphone Cup.


Tuan Anh, a member of the national team, was part of a nine-man break that broke from the main pack after only 20km in the 109km stage from Tieu Can District in Tra Vinh Province to Bac Binh Minh District in Vinh Long Province.


The 24-year-old made a dash for home with 600m remaining and held off the peloton to win with 2 hours 50 minutes 33 seconds.


Another national rider Nguyen Nam Cuc of Sai Gon Plant Protection I was second with only one bike length after Anh and HCM City team’s Le Nguyet Minh came in third in fine weather.


Anh, who won the green jersey in 2007, and Cuc caught up to the breakaway group at Cang Long Town and the group led all the way until the finishing straight.


Nguyen Van Tai kept the yellow jersey when his closest challengers Dang Ngoc Tu and Truong Nguyen Thanh Nhan crossed the finish line in the main pack.


Bui Minh Thuy keeps the green jersey, although the 24-year-old Tuan Anh has closed the gap to just one point and Le Van Quynh is just two points away from second place in the points category.


Also in this stage, the Military Zone team came in first, Sai Gon Plant Protection II finished second and Sai Gon Plant Protection I was third.


The 150km fourth stage will today start from Can Tho City to Vi Thanh Town of Hau Giang Province.


The 18th tour, which is all flat course, goes through nine provinces and cities before finishing on September 9 in Long Xuyen City of An Giang Province. —

Swimmer Anh Tu breaks 21-year record

HA NOI — Swimmer Vuong Nguyen Anh Tu of HCM City broke a 21-year-old record in the boy’s 200m breaststroke at the National Student Sports Games on Thursday.


Tu finished the race in two minutes and 39.57 seconds, beating Hanoian Quach Hoai Nam’s former record of 2:40.80, which he set in the second Games in 1987.


In the girl’s 100m breast stroke, Long An’s Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy also broke the old record of 1:17.85 with a new time of 1:13.53.


As for teams, HCM City won a gold in the girl’s 4x100m medley with a record time of 5:22.42, beating the previous 5:33.75 record. The team led the swimming event with 13 golds, eight silvers, and four bronzes. Long An and Thanh Hoa were the runners-up.


The HCM City team also revealed their prowess in football when they bagged another gold medal after defeating Nam Dinh 1-0 in the secondary school boys’ final.


Meanwhile Hai Duong’s primary school boys crushed Phu Yen 6-0 to take the title.


In the archery competition, Dien Bien took the lead with 311 points. Phu Tho came in second with 194 points, and third went to Vinh Phuc with 142 points.


In shuttlecock, Dong Thap pocketed three golds.


More than 8,000 participants, from 64 provinces and cities, competed in 17 student events including track and field, swimming, football, chess, shuttlecock, taekwondo, karate, judo and wushu for 560 medals. —
