Vietnam ’s campaign to “Study and Follow Ho Chi Minh’s moral example” will focus on the late president’s ideology and morals regarding Party building work as it continues on its course in 2010.

This was agreed at a meeting of the Central Steering Committee for the Campaign in Hanoi on January 4.

Addressing the meeting, Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, who is head of the Central Steering Committee, cited the outcome of a survey as saying that the campaign had caught the full attention of the public.

The campaign has become more effective and has produced some practical outcomes as it has been carried out creatively in many localities, according to the Party chief.

He continued to underscore the importance of State leaders, management officials and party members at all levels demonstrating their credibility to advance the campaign.

“Officials in senior positions should be truly exemplary and do what they say they are going to do” Manh emphasised.

Since it was launched three years ago, the campaign has brought visible changes in the awareness of both Party members and the nation’s citizens in the way they live and work according to the late President’s doctrine, heard the meeting.

The campaign has evolved into a movement where people use the late President Ho Chi Minh as a moral example when contributing to building and defending the motherland.

The participants agreed that the leadership of the Party’s committees, sub-steering committees and the heads of offices at all levels was extremely important and decisive in encouraging all the people to take part in the campaign.

Class upgrades only meet 30% of target

Educational departments in local provinces in the last two years have completed the construction of 18,600 classrooms, accounting for just 30 per cent of the targeted number. Officials blamed the problem on lax management of local authorities, slow disbursement of capitals and lack of co-ordination among State agencies in approving construction projects.

HA NOI — Most tournament seeds survived the first round of the Japan Open yesterday, including Viet Nam’s Nguyen Tien Minh, who eliminated Denmark’s Christian Lind Thomsen.

Minh, the world No 9 and seeded No 8 in the Open, needed only 33 minute to send the unseeded Thomsen home, with a 21-13, 21-9 win.

Minh, who grabbed two important titles at the Badminton World Federation last month, will next face with Japan’s Sho Sasaki, who entered the second round after defeating fellow countryman Kazushi Yamada 21-12, 21-15 in the first round.

Minh and Sasaki have met twice previously, each winning one match.

Meanwhile, world No 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia brushed aside Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana, showing no ill-effects from a knee injury.

The top seed, who said an old injury to his left knee had recently flared, needed just 34 minutes to score a 21-9, 21-15 win over the in-form China Masters finalist.

Other top players including Athens Olympic gold medallist Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, his compatriot and defending champion Soni Dwi Kuncoro, Peter Gade of Denmark, and 2008 Asian champion Park Sung-hwan of South Korea also won.

Fourth seed Hidayat beat Chan Yan-kit of Hong Kong, fifth seed Kuncoro defeated Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand, and third seed Gade outgunned Rajiv Ouseph of England, all in straight games.

Park needed 52 minutes to beat Wong Choong Hann of Malaysia 16-21, 21-13, 21-12, while 2009 Asian champion Bao Chunlai of China downed Hong Ji-hoon of South Korea 23-21, 21-16.

On the women’s side, world No 1 Zhou Mi of Hong Kong failed to clear the first hurdle when she fell to Adriyanti Firdasari yesterday.

The Masters Final champion, who played for China previously, suffered a shock 21-17, 18-21, 21-18 defeat in the first round to the Indonesian, ranked 20th in the world.

“It was difficult in the first game to get used to the wind (caused by the air conditioner) and its direction. I managed to take the second game, but physically I’m tired in the third game,” said Zhou. “I’m not physically in good form recently. I’ve been playing recently to find out in what aspect I must improve.”

For Firdasari, it was her first win over Zhou in three meetings.

“I’m very, very happy. I’ve never expected to beat her, so I just tried to keep playing,” said the 2005 SEA Games gold medallist. “I lost to her twice before, so I really wanted to beat her this time,” she added. — AFP/

HA NOI — Vietnamese player Nguyen Tien Minh is headed to the third round of the Japan Open after beating host and rival Sho Sasaki 2-0 yesterday in Tokyo.

It was the second straight time that Minh met and defeated his unseeded opponent.

Minh, the world No 9 and tournament No 8, finished the match in 37 minutes and won 21-10, 21-18.

Sasaki seemed nervous in the first set because he was forced to play a top seed early in the tournament. The Japanese player was unable to avoid Minh’s difficult rallies that kept him running all over the court.

The second set saw more equal competition between the two sides. Minh, despite having better technique and skills, faced a strong comeback from his opponent, who received amazing support from his hometown fans.

Sasaki was doing a perfect job until he made a mistake at 18-all. Minh took full advantage of the error and went ahead to win points to finish the match with a stormy smash from the baseline.

In the third round, Minh will play another Japanese opponent Kazuteru Kozai, who defeated his team mate Koichi Saeki 21-15, 21-15 yesterday.

Also in the men’s singles event, Indonesian Simon Santoro made a big bang when he brushed away the world and tournament No 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia.

It was an impressive win for Santoro, who was not seeded at the Open and came from behind to win 19-21, 21-15, 21-19.

It seemed that Lee’s left knee injury strongly affected his performance yesterday, even though he still provided Santoro with an ample amount of challenges.

With the win, Santoso is set up to clash against defending champion and team mate Soni Dwi Kuncoro, who defeated China’s Chen Long 21-19, 15-21, 21-14.

Other top players include Athens Olympic gold medalist Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia ranked No 4; his compatriot and defending champion Soni Dwi Kuncoro ranked No 5; Peter Gade of Denmark ranked No 3; and 2008 Asian champion Park Sung-hwan of South Korea ranked No 6, all advanced.

On the women’s side, the second seed Wang Lin of China trounced her fellow countryman Zhu Lin 21-11, 21-12. Wang became the top candidate for the title after the No 1 player Zhou Mi of Hong Kong lost on Wednesday. No 3 Tine Rasmussen of Denmark unexpectedly lost 21-15, 15-21, 14-21 to Wang Xin also from China.

The women’s pool next round was strongly represented by Chinese athletes after the third player from the country, Wang Yi Han ranked No 4, won yesterday. She easily beat Petya Nedelcheva of Bulgaria 21-9, 21-14.

The US$200,000 tournament is scheduled to finish on Sunday. —

HA NOI — Doors are wide open for Nguyen Tien Minh of Viet Nam to clinch the Japan Open after easily beating Kazutery Kozai in Tokyo.

Minh, who jumped one step in the world rankings this week to No 8, defeated his second Japanese rival at the competition 21-14, 21-16 in the quarter-final round.

Kozai tried to learn from fellow countryman Sho Sasaki, who lost to Minh on Thursday, and attempted to dominate the match in the beginning. He pocketed the first point of the match and was in high spirits with a little help from the hometown fans.

However, Minh refused to play the part of the fool. He showed his power by levelling the score immediately. Despite his efforts, Kozai was unable to catch up with the winner of Taipei and Thailand Opens.

In the second set, Kozai attempted to come back. The Japanese player went ahead at 10-10 and managed to set up a three point lead against Minh.

While many people might have thought that the match was headed for a third set, Minh kicked off his stormy attacks that helped him capture the second set with seven straight points.

The Vietnamese player, who is seeded No 8, expects to go deeper into the tournament after another top player was sent home yesterday.

The two-time Japan Open champion Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark, who was ranked No 3, was eliminated by Bao Chunlai, an unseeded Chinese player, in a 17-21, 14-21 defeat.

Gade was the eighth player ranked in the top 10 to exit the tournament.

Minh and Bao, the former world No 2, will be playing in the second semi-final match today.

The first semi-final game will be between Simon Santoro and the No 4 seed, Taufik Hidayat, both from Indonesia.

Santoro coasted to a 21-16, 21-17 win over team-mate Soni Dwi Kuncorom. Hidayat, the Athens Olympic gold medallist, came from behind to outclass the 2008 Asian champion Park Sung-hwan of South Korea 12-21, 28-26, 21-15 in the other quarter-final match.

On the women’s side, China’s Wang Lin, the top candidate for the title, faced little difficulty in beating Pi Hong Yan of France, 21-9, 21-12.

Her teammate Wang Xin trounced Mayu Sekiya, 21-14, 19-21, 21-19, which set the stage for an all-Chinese semi-final clash today.

In other news, Wang Yi Han, also Chinese, beat Thailand’s Salakjit Ponsana 21-11, 21-15. She will meet Eriko Hirose of Japan, who is the only non-Chinese athlete in the quarter-finals, in the next round. Hirose overcame Nicole Grether of Germany 21-7, 21-18 yesterday. —

Minh hampered by coaching void

In Vietnam Sports on September 13, 2009 at 4:18 am

HA NOI — Nguyen Tien Minh is threatening standings of the world’s top players after his outstanding performance in the recent international tournament.

The Vietnamese player is now ninth after winning a title at the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix Gold late last month, one of the Badminton World Federation’s official events.

In the near future, Minh will have a chance to make his dream come true with four international tournaments ahead in Japan, Hong Kong, China and Viet Nam.

With his improvement, Minh is expected to surprise competitors at the most important sporting event of the region, the 25th SEA Games, in Laos this December.

Minh, who grabbed a bronze medal at the last SEA Games, however, set his goal to defend his standing.

“I will take part in the national championship this month to keep my gold medal. Then I will focus on training for the SEA Games and try to keep the bronze medal,” Minh said.

“It is a difficult task because here I will meet both Hydayat (from Indonesia) and Lee (of Malaysia). But I will try my best.”

Minh and his 15 teammates are waiting for the coming tournaments and a training course abroad.

What he needs is a foreign-qualified coach, who will help him improve his technique and skills.

Success for the athletes is partly attributed to the labour of both local and foreign coaches, especially Yang Shi Qiang who guided Minh last year.

However, when Yang said goodbye, Minh continued to work with Vietnamese coaches whose abilities were limited.

The player has expressed his need for a good trainer, but for several reasons, including the lack of funds, he remains alone. Already, Minh has had to compete in international tournaments without a coach, resulting in poor performances.

“After the 2008 Olympics, I had no coach travelling with me to events. As a result, I had problems that I couldn’t solve by myself,” said Minh.

A coach not only supports his players in the field by improving their skills, but also helps them recover quickly from exhaustion and shares experiences with them.

“I need a trainer who understands me and can help me bring my ability into play. It is good if he is a foreigner but a local one is okay.

“I asked his coach Nguyen The Huy to go with me to Thailand and Chinese Taipei. And the resulting two titles were great for me,” Minh said.

In final, both the Viet Nam Badminton Federation and HCM City’s badminton department officials have promised to invite a Chinese coach for Minh to ensure his achievements in both local events and the SEA Games. —

Ho Chi Minh City: Less plastic equals less pollution

In Uncategorized on August 27, 2008 at 4:49 pm

HCM City (VNA) – Ho Chi Minh City environmental experts and officials have proposed limiting the use of plastic bags by supermarkets to reduce pollution in city waterways.

Experts spoke on August 26 at a seminar in HCM City held by the city’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the HCM City Waste Recycling Fund and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

The city fund and the UN, in a joint survey, said their findings showed that restricting the use of plastic bags in supermarkets and trading centres should be done as soon as posible.

Every month the Maximark chain uses 10 tonnes of plastic bags and the Big C supermarket 20 tonnes. More than 30 tonnes of plastic bags are used in supermarkets and other shops every day in the city, the survey found.

Ms. Kim Ae Seon of the Korean Environmental and Resources Corporation of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Environmental Ministry said the use of instant use containers at fast food restaurants or coffee shops and other non-biodegradable products needed to be controlled.

Kim said many customers in RoK still preferred plastic bags instead of paper bags.

Associate professor Doctor Bui Cach Tuyen, deputy general director of the city’s Environmental Department, said raising awareness among consumers was critical and that a media campaign was needed.

Many residents still throw plastic bags in rivers and canals, Tuyen added.

He suggested a tax on plastic bags used in supermarkets and new policies on encouraging waste collectors to recycle.

Le Van Khoa, head of the city’s recycling fund, said a fee should be charged to customers who want to use plastic bags.-

Ho Chi Minh City to have container port

In Uncategorized on August 7, 2008 at 2:27 pm

Ho Chi Minh City expects to see a trade boom with a new major container port scheduled for operation in May next year.

The Tan Thuan Industrial Development Company and the DP World from the United Arab Emirate (UEA) are accelerating construction of the Saigon Central Container Port with a capacity of handling 1.8 million TEU a year in Hiep Phuoc industrial zone in Nha Be district.

The 360 million USD project, covering 40 ha, will build in the first phase 500m of quays capable to handle 1 million TEU.

Another project to dredge the Soai Rap river is expected to enable the port to receive 50,000-70,000-tonne cargo ships.-
